Description: Forced by a high emissions greenhouse gas scenario (RCP8.5). This simulation yields an extreme reduction of streamflow by the late 21st Century, although those flow reductions are not pronounced until about the year 2040, after the end of our model time horizon.

HAD85 Intermediate Stress Climate Scenario

Time Range: From 1994 up to 2033
Climate Model Source: HadGEM2-es_rcp85

Description: Forced by the RCP8.5 high-emissions greenhouse gas scenario. This simulation yields an intermediate streamflow starting in the mid-21st Century.

Simulated Observed Inflows + Extended Drought

Time Range: Uses observed historical inflows from 1994 to 2013. Appends 20 years of synthetic drought from 2014 up to 2033.

Description: Derived from daily observed streamflows at the pair of gauges at San Marcial, summed up to create annual flow values. The final three years of historical observations, which were severe drought years in the Rio Grande, are extended into future years to prescribe a scenario with projected water shortages corresponding to a prolonged drought.

HAD26 Mean Climate Scenario

Time Range: From 1994 up to 2033
Climate Model Source: HadGEM2_es_rcp26

Description: This simulation yields a more modest reduction in future streamflow compared to RCP8.5 results. HAD26 yields future streamflow close to the average of all simulations examined.

MIR26 Wet Climate Scenario

Time Range: From 1994 up to 2033
Climate Model Source: Miroc-esm_rcp26

Description: Forced by the same lower-emissions scenario used for HAD26. MIR26 yields a wetter scenario with the highest streamflow projection for all the reclamation simulations.

Availability of Substitute Technology

Technology, such as desalination costs in Texas, range between $410 and $847 per acre-foot (TWDB, 2009). Urban technology is the base, as municipalities are currently the only water market capable of paying for these technologies. In the future, prices could decrease to make such technologies more affordable for other uses, even agriculture.
